Chapter 1
A wave of excited voices had washed over Kris as he'd entered the room. Dozens of frantic contestants trying to find their way around as they went through the process of being signed in for Hollywood week. There were too many people for Kris to be comfortable, too much of a mob scene for him. Culture shock. He needed a few minutes in a quiet zone, just him and God, to get back into the proper mode. Thankfully, he'd made it through registration so he could do just that.
Rushing, he managed to catch the next elevator and with a glance down at his key packet, he requested that someone closer to the buttons, push the number four for him. It seemed everyone was there for Idol as they chattered about their experiences so far. He stayed quiet with his head down until the door opened on his floor. It didn't take him long to find room '420'. The anticipation of meeting his roommate galloping through his stomach shoved aside his amusement at that interesting tidbit.
No one was in sight as he made his way into the room, but somebody had been there. Whoever it was had made themselves at home by all the products littering the bathroom counter. There was makeup and hairspray…
"What?"
Kris took a step back to make sure that there really was girly stuff in the bathroom. There was. Not sure what to do at this point, he shrugged as he continued into the room. Then he noticed there was guy stuff on one bed including a pair of the biggest cowboy boots he'd ever seen on the floor. He was confused. Maybe they assigned him a room with regular guests. A couple maybe?
Then a voice sounded from the patio.
"Hey mom, I think my roommate just got here," a male voice said. "Let me call you back."
A second later, a man stepped into the room, a man whose one stride took him nearly into the middle of the living area which made Kris rock back. Not in fear but so he could keep the other guy into focus. When he was able to get a good look at him, everything clicked into place. His roommate was wearing the makeup.
"Hey there, I'm Adam."
Adam held a hand out to him, which Kris took automatically while still trying to pull all the pieces of Adam into one package. The black hair that flopped into this face, the rings that adorned most of his fingers, the earring, painted fingernails and the eyeliner that emphasized his gorgeous blue eyes. The word, gay, flashed through his mind and as he fumbled for something to say, Adam dropped his hand while wariness was reflected in Adam's eyes. That wariness finally made Kris start talking. He didn't want to make anyone uncomfortable.
"Hi, I'm Kris," he smiled. "When did you get in?'
"I live in LA so I just needed to move some of my stuff in. Where are you from?"
"Conway, Arkansas."
"You're a long way from home," Adam said, sitting on the bed closest to him. He leaned back on one elbow as he watched Kris toss his suitcase on the free bed. "I just made myself at home. If you want to switch," he waved his hand between the beds. "Just let me know."
"That's fine," Kris said, flipping open his messenger bag. "I'm easy."
"Oh yeah?"
Looking up, he found Adam grinning at him with a raised eyebrow. Kris blushed as he realized what he'd just said. Now Adam was looking him over, as if deciding whether or not he liked the fact that Kris was easy. A part of him wanted to know if Adam did, but the married straight man in him took over.
"Not like that," Kris snapped.
The effect of his too harsh words was instantaneous. Adam's grin was replaced with a mask while he hid behind lowered lids. Kris felt like a jerk. This roommate thing wasn't going so good. He kept offending Adam while Adam was, well, making him uncomfortable. Not that he cared if Adam was gay. That wasn't it. It was the aura radiating off him. That combined with the sexual aliveness that seemed to ooze from Adam's pores, it was attracting him like a moth to a flame.
Kris was always the laidback guy of the group, the quiet, earnest one who just blended into the background. Sometimes he dreamed about being like Adam, comfortable in his own skin; ready to flaunt himself to the world, and making everyone look his way. It made Kris want to bask in that glow to see if any of it rubbed off on him. Except it wasn't him, and there was no way he could get away with it. Not in his lifetime. So, he took a deep breath and tried to explain himself.
"I'm about as uneasy as one can get," Kris joked, throwing stuff into different piles on the bed. "I just married my high school sweetheart. We've been together since I was sixteen."
"Wow, you're kidding." Now curiosity, and a little understanding, had replaced the negative emotions. "She was your first?"
"Yeah."
"You're a Christian, too?" Adam glanced down at the well-worn Bible lying amongst Kris's things.
"Yeah."
Leftover from his years in mission work, Kris would try to gauge a person's interest in God when asked that question, so that he could help them find a relationship with the Lord. Except this time he didn't pursue it because his instincts were screaming that it would be something else that would drive Adam away. Despite all the differences between them, Kris was sure that this was something he didn't want.
You've only known the guy for a few minutes, what difference does it make?
After a quick shake of his head to avoid exploring the answers to that loaded question, he grabbed his few bathroom things to add to the already crowded counter. When he returned Adam was lying on his back with his eyes closed.
"You believe in God?"
It seemed the only logical step in the conversation, but for some reason, Kris spoke as gently as he could when he asked. He sat on his bed facing Adam.
"Yeah," Adam opened his eyes to look at him. "But I don't think he believes in me." He laughed. "Maybe that's why my dream role is to play Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar. A little payback."
"He believes in you," Kris said, wondering why anyone would think God wouldn't love them. But then he'd never walked in Adam's shoes. Now seemed like a good time to change the subject before things got too heavy or too heated. He grabbed onto Adam's confession to find a safe topic of conversation. "You do theater?"
It had the effect Kris wanted because Adam came alive. Whatever guise he'd been trying to maintain was gone as he sat up so that the two men were almost knee-to-knee. This was the Adam that Kris wanted to get to know.
"It's been how I've been making my living," he said waving his hand as if it was easy to do. "Been doing it since I was a kid. I was once the lion in Wizard of Oz. Lately I've been in Wicked and The Ten Commandments."
"Wow, that's impressive. I don't think I could do that. My mom used to have to pay me to sing in front of people."
Adam smiled. "How did you get to Idol? You're going to be singing in front of a lot of people."
"Don't remind me." Kris clutched his stomach. "I'm not as nervous about it as I used to be. I've been playing in bars, and singing in church, but nothing like this."
"Bars? Church? That's an interesting combination."
"I guess it is," Kris said. "It's pretty much the only choices in Arkansas."
"You do what you have to do. It's the nature of the biz." Adam squeezed Kris's hand in support. "This is going to be great, and if you want, I'll help you with stage fright."
"That would be cool. I'd appreciate that."
And just as fast as it happened, Adam's touch was gone. The electricity that was Adam was still zipping through Kris's system though, as Adam seemed to switch modes. The intimacy was gone as Adam grabbed his boots. Kris wanted a freeze button so he could analyze his reactions, but it was gone. He felt a bit dizzy from the changes in Adam's moods.
"I'm starving," Adam said.
"Me too, but they don't do the dinner thing for a couple of more hours."
"We're free tonight." Adam flashed a wicked grin. "Enough time for lukewarm, reheated hotel food later. There's a bunch of restaurants across from here. Want to tag along?"
"Sure."
Kris stood, ready to walk out the door, but he soon found out that being with Adam was living in another time zone. After pulling his boots on, Adam headed for the bathroom. Kris didn't follow but he heard the sound of hairspray, Adam humming and water running before he reappeared about five minutes later. By then Kris was staring out the window while he waited.
"Sorry."
"No problem," Kris said. He almost added his standard with Katy that it was worth it, but managed to stop it before it left his mouth.
"Yeah, I know you're easy," Adam teased.
Kris ducked his head, but he was laughing too. He had a feeling he was going to be ribbed about that one a lot. At least they seemed to be on comfortable ground now, which was what he wanted. Maybe even on the way to being friends, which was even better.
"Yeah, yeah," Kris said, smiling. "Keep that up and I might have to be difficult."
"Never," Adam said over his shoulder as he headed for the door. "You're way too much of good boy for that."
He couldn't think of anything to say to that, so he just let it go. Shrugging, he followed expecting Adam to head out the door first. Adam didn't. He had stopped to hold the door open for him so Kris could pass him.
"Thanks," Kris said as he stepped into the hallway.
"No problem," Adam replied. "Do you have your solo picked out yet?"
"Yeah. Well, I think so."
They talked about their solos as they headed for the elevator. It was common ground where they both felt comfortable. Adam was talking about his song choices when the doors slid open. Kris was just reaching to push the button for the lobby when they heard someone.
"Hey hold that elevator," a female shouted.
Adam put his hand on the door to keep it from closing just as a redheaded girl bounded onto the elevator with them.
"Thanks," she said. "I didn't want to give my mom a chance to change her mind. She's afraid something is going to happen to me in the big bad city. You guys here for Idol?"
Kris shared a look of amusement with Adam as their new companion babbled. A whole conversation seemed to take place in that glance, one where they decided that they were taking her under their wing. Kris stepped back, leaning against the rail as he watched Adam take over.
"Yeah, we're here for Idol," Adam said. "I'm Adam and that's Kris."
The girl turned to smile at Kris, giving him a small wave. "I'm Allison. This is so great."
"I take it you're excited?" Adam asked.
"Aren't you?" Allison laughed. "You can even see the Hollywood sign from my room. I've wanted to explore since we got here and my mom kept saying no, but I finally got her to say yes. Where are you two going?"
"To get food," Adam said, smiling. "You want to join us? It's across the complex."
"Afraid I'll have to say no," she sighed. "If my mom found out that I left the hotel she'd kill me."
Adam shrugged. "That's okay. We can eat at the restaurant in the hotel."
Kris smiled at the way Adam changed their plans so easily so they could include Allison. It seemed to Kris that Adam was a good boy, too. Somewhere along the way Kris had forgotten about that prayer time he wanted earlier. It seemed that Adam had given him what he needed because he was feeling more at ease and even eager about the difficult week ahead. Instead of feeling guilty about not turning to prayer, Kris decided that God had given him what he needed with Adam.
"Are you sure you don't mind eating here instead of going out?" Allison asked.
"Not at all," Kris replied.
"Done," Adam said with a nod.
They stepped out of the elevator and into the chaos that was American Idol, but this time Kris was ready to face it. With his new friends, he knew everything was going to be just fine.
