Chapter One.
Chapter Two
Chapter 3
They had agreed to be friends. At this point, Kris doubted this, or maybe he was being hypersensitive about Adam's lack of attention all day. Adam had spent most of the day hanging out with everyone but him. Deep down he knew he shouldn't be so worried about it, but after yesterday's fiasco in the bathroom, he could understand why Adam might want to direct his attention anywhere but toward Kris. It was probably what was best for Adam. Yet, for reasons he couldn't bring himself to define, he felt rejected by Adam.
Now, at the end of another grueling day, and after being in a different holding room than Adam, he had never felt more alone. Kris leaned forward, resting his forehead on his knees. He shouldn't be thinking about Adam. Like everyone else in Room 4, he should be worried about the judge's decision regarding his fate.
When Adam and Allison were called to join the first group, Kris just knew they'd made it. He knew they were both phenomenal in their performances and loaded with talent. Rocking a bit, he kept trying to reassure himself that it wasn't over yet. He wasn't ready to go back to Arkansas. He wanted to stay in the competition, to be surrounded by people who shared the same dream as he did, and to remain close to Adam. Even if they were never as close as he wanted them to be.
The door opened, making him look up. Tatiana walked in. Her arrival seemed to take the air out of the room. Everyone was thinking the same thing. This group was going home. Kris rubbed his face in weary defeat. He'd done what he could, but it was feeling more and more like it was time to put his guitar away. This was a sigh that it was time to get a real job so he could build a life with his wife. The future was suddenly a bleak landscape of being like everyone else in Conway. He sighed as he realized that there would never be a Kris Allen star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Loud, but muffled cheering broke through his thoughts. One group was through. He glanced around at the contestants around him, who were looking as unhappy as he did. Tatiana was openly sobbing somewhere behind him. No one said anything as they waited. Almost fifteen minutes went by and then another room erupted in celebration.
"That's it," someone said.
Someone else said, "So, when you hear two rooms scream, what does that mean?"
No one answered. The presumed answer was too depressing to be voiced aloud. Thankfully, they didn't have to wait too long. Just then, Paula, Kara and Randy walked in. Kris was terrified, but he was desperately trying to hold onto some hope despite the overwhelming odds against them. The judges were talking about them doing the best they could, and asking them if they brought everything they could to their auditions. Tatiana cried louder, bringing comforting words from Kara. The tension was drawing tighter with her drama.
From the back, Matt Breitzke raised his hand to ask, "So, it is a no, right?"
Paula smiled, "No, it’s a yes."
The room erupted in excitement. Everyone was jumping up and down, celebrating their victory. Kris did his happy dance because he was still in the competition. It wasn't time to leave yet.
Kara waved her hands to get their attention. "What are still doing in here? The party is in the hallway."
The doors opened to a wave of joyful people, hugging and dancing. Some were even singing. Kris felt like he was being welcomed into heaven. He hugged Alexis, and Megan but he quickly lost track of who he'd congratulated. Kris slid along the outside of the excitement looking for his friends. Allison found him first.
"We made it." She exclaimed, clapping her hands while bouncing on her feet. "We're almost through. Yes, yes!"
Kris laughed, but managed to catch her in a hug. "Congratulations. No one deserves it more than you do."
The cameras were still filming. They wanted everyone's excitement to show America. Kris was trying. He kept hugging people, laughing; doing little dances as he slowly progressed looking for Adam. He stood on his tiptoes to see if he could spot him. He did and Adam was moving in the other direction. His heart dropped as he shoved his hands in his pockets.
"Okay everyone," one of the tech people shouted above the din. It took a minute before there was quiet. "We're done for the night, but be in the front of the hotel at 8 AM ready to go. Tomorrow is final cuts."
"Field trip," he heard Allison squeal from somewhere across the sea of contestants.
Kris spotted her amongst the throng. He swallowed back his disappointment. Adam was with her. They'd found each other. Maybe they'd realized when they were called first that Kris wasn't in their league. Maybe they'd decided that they didn't want to hang out with him. Or at least Adam didn't. Tomorrow was going to be an early day. He figured that maybe he should just head up to his room.
"Man, I'm glad to see you," Matt G. said, grabbing Kris in a hug. "I hated all of us separated like that. So unfair," he waved his hand.
"Yeah, it was torture," Kris agreed. "Our group was the last one told and we thought for sure that we out."
"You? Never," Alexis said, joining them. "You're too talented."
"Congratulations," Kris told her, reaching out to give her a side hug.
Suddenly strong arms encircled him from behind. "We made it," Adam whispered in his ear. Then Allison was back in his arms. Kris's fears exploded against the overwhelming wave of emotion he felt from those holding him. He laughed, finally, and fully, letting the triumph of making another cut fill him. Allison was rocking the three of them from side to side.
"There is no way I'm going to be able to sleep," Allison said. "I want to dance." She pulled away to do just that. "I want to celebrate."
"I can go for that," Adam agreed, with his hand still on Kris's side.
"It's late," Alexis said, and then she laughed. "Forget I said that. I sound like an overprotective mother."
"You are," Allison said, with a grin. She clapped her hands. "What are we going to do?"
"What are we doing?" Anoop asked, joining them with Megan in tow.
"What's going on?" Megan asked.
"We're trying to figure out a way to celebrate," Adam said. "But Mama Alexis thinks it's too late and we should all go to bed."
"It kind of is," Matt said. "But then again I know I would never sleep."
"So, what are we going to do?" Megan asked. "They're not going to want us to leave here."
"I know," Matt said, with a broad smile. "We can play Manhunt."
"Ooooh cool," Allison said. "I'm in."
"What's Manhunt?" Nathaniel asked, stopping to join them. "Is that a game or something?"
"It's like tag," Matt said. "Somebody is it, and they have to capture all the other players, and confine them in 'jail'. If you capture everybody then you win. It's fun."
"You're serious?" Adam asked, not looking very happy. "You want to go play tag?"
"Don't be a spoilsport," Megan said, pinching his arm. "You'll have fun."
"Everybody in?" Allison asked, looking around. No one said no. They all turned to Adam to await his decision.
"Come on," Kris urged, turning his puppy face in Adam's direction.
It worked. With a laugh, Adam threw his hands up in surrender. "Okay, I'm in, too."
"Yay," Allison said. "Oh, this is going to be so much fun."
Kris was ready to play. Like everyone else, he'd been building up nervous energy all week that he'd never really burned off. Even if they'd gotten through one cut, there would another one the next day. They'd made friends even if it wasn't the wisest thing to do because they could leave even if you stayed. Tonight had been especially emotionally punishing as they waited for the results. All they could do was wait while the judges had taken hours to make a decision.
Tomorrow was the final cut to the Top 36. Almost half would be gone by the end of the next day. Maybe him. He couldn't stand to think about it for another minute. He needed to have some fun, and build some memories with these people before it was over.
"Where are we going to play?" Megan asked.
"I say outside," Adam said, doing his little head nod. "In the courtyard. Most of the stores are closed and there shouldn't be anyone around. It gives us plenty of room to play."
For a guy who'd resisted, Adam was suddenly into the game, surprising Kris. He couldn’t really imagine Adam allowing himself to get hot and sweaty by playing a game. It showed how much Adam liked the others, and that he cared about fitting in. This only made Kris like him more.
"I know," Alexis said. "We can use those elephants as the base and the jail."
It was perfect. In the courtyard of the Hollywood & Highland Center were massive pillars with elephants on top. They were across the courtyard from each other right next to the Arch. It would be the perfect playground.
"Who is going to be it?" Nathaniel asked.
"Adam," Kris said, looking back over his shoulder at him.
"Why me?" Adam asked, laughing with one eyebrow cocked. "Do I look like I want to chase you?"
"Yeah," Kris said, grinning. He almost winked at Adam as they shared that private joke. " Plus, you're taller and there's no way you could hide as easily. Besides with those long legs you have the advantage at catching us."
"Let's go," Matt said, rubbing his hands.
They all rushed for the exit of the hotel. It was only a quick walk to their appointed playground. On the way, they decided which elephant was the safe base and which would be the jail where Adam would collect his prisoners.
"I am so going to win this," Adam said, stopping in the archway. He closed his eyes as he began the count that would allow the others a chance to hide.
None of them hesitated. They all took off running in different directions. Kris took off to the right. Allison was with Megan, going to the left. The game was on. With the darkened doorways, benches and trees there was plenty of places to hide. Kris crouched down behind a trashcan. He could see Nathaniel running toward the end, and away from safety. Kris grinned. He just needed Adam to head to the other side of the fountain. Once he had moved beyond Kris's hiding place, it would be nothing for Kris to get to base.
~~~~
"I'm coming for you," Adam called out, heading into the middle of the yard. He turned around, scouting out for victims. This wasn't really his scene but he was willing to give it a chance. He agreed they all needed to have a little fun.
He would have preferred going to one of the clubs for a little adult entertainment, or pounding Kris into the mattress - but, one he wasn't going to pat Allison on the head and send her to bed just so he could have fun without her. There was no way he could do that to her. And two, having sex with Kris was never going to happen so he might as well make the most of the time he could have with the guy. He reassured himself that that was why he agreed to play Manhunt. It certainly had nothing to do with what the little voice inside his head telling him that it sounded like fun, especially since Kris was playing.
A flash of blonde to his left caught his attention. He grinned as he took off running. Alexis yelped when she saw Adam on her heels. Losing focus, she ran the wrong direction and into Adam's path. Darting to her left, she managed to elude Adam, but ran into Nathaniel who'd been hiding behind one of the food carts.
Alexis took off, leaving poor Nathaniel behind to face Adam. It was an easy victory. Nathaniel hopped around as he tried to figure out what to do, but it was over. Adam grabbed his shoulder.
"Go to jail. Do not pass go," Adam instructed. Then he bounded onto one of the benches. "I've got one of you," he shouted. "I will get you, my pretties."
"Whatever, Lambert," Matt yelled. "There is no way you can get all of us."
Matt was to his right, somewhere between him and base. Adam couldn't see him. He crouched down to see if anyone else moved while he was out of sight. After waiting for less than a minute, Adam was off again. He was going to have to search for them. He plastered himself against a store window to move slowly in the shadows.
Anoop was the next to give himself away. He appeared from a darkened doorway on the other side of the courtyard. He was a blur as he sprinted toward base. Adam took off after him. His jacket was flapping behind him and his boots were clattering against the cement. He had the wrong outfit on for playing a game, a pair of sneakers would have been better.
Then a movement to his right caught his attention. Without pausing, he switched directions. It was Alexis reappearing in an attempt to reach base. She didn't have anyone left to use as a shield. Adam easily overtook her, grabbing her by the arm.
"Off with you," he crowed. He'd lost the chance to catch Anoop, but had gained Alexis. It was a fair trade, he thought.
Ready to go again, Adam slowly turned around, trying to find someone else. Where were they? He hadn't seen Kris, or Allison and Megan. It was as if they'd vanished. Kris, he could see being able to hide from him, but not the girls. Especially Allison who was never quiet for long.
"Adam," Kris called to him in a hoarse whisper. "Back up and act like you don't hear me."
Well, that was easy. Apparently all he had to do was think of Kris, and out he comes! Adam shuffled backwards until he was next to the trashcan. Glancing down, he saw Kris grinning up at him.
"Uh, you do know the idea is to get away from me, don't you?" Adam whispered.
"Yeah, well, despite the rumors, I don't always do what I’m told."
"You sure know how to use the double entendres to your advantage," Adam said, shaking his head to get rid of the image of punishing a disobedient Kris. Not his usual thing, but if Kris asked, he would probably go for it. The guy was just too schoolboy for his own good.
Kris laughed. "You just have a dirty mind."
"Which I think you like," Adam teased. "But I'm beginning to look like I’m up to something standing here."
"Oh, and are you up to something?"
Adam coughed while Kris giggled. Where did this version of Kris come from? If he didn't know better, he would think Kris was flirting with him or being a tease. But Adam did know better. He decided that Kris was trying to prove that he could be a friend to Adam. It was flattering, but he liked Kris just the way he was.
"No," Adam retorted. "I'm not. Are you?"
"Well kind of," Kris said. "Megan and Allison are on the other side of the courtyard…by the Gap store. They're hiding behind the planter over there."
"Thanks," Adam said. "Don't worry. I'll be back for you."
Without giving Kris the chance to say anything else, Adam headed straight across the courtyard. Once there, he flattened himself against the storefront, looking down toward the planter that Kris indicated. Yep, he could see purple. Allison was there. There wouldn't be time for stealth. He took off running, straight at them.
"Get out of here," Megan shouted, standing up.
Allison ran toward the center of the courtyard.
"Give it up, Allison. I'm going to get you."
"No you won't," she tossed over her shoulder.
His threat didn't slow her down. For a girl in a dress and heels she was moving fast. Laughing, Adam ran around a table that was in his path, ready to build the speed to catch Allison. A chair skittered in front of him, making Adam stop on this toes to prevent him from going headfirst over it.
"You won't get her," Megan laughed, holding another chair. "I won't let you." She pushed the chair toward him. "Run, Allison!"
Suddenly Kris jumped out from behind the trashcan. He darted out in front of Allison, threw his hands out and gave a battle cry loud enough to echo through the empty mall. Everyone stopped. Including Allison, who turned to run the other way, directly back to a waiting Adam. She was laughing so hard that she was clutching her stomach. Adam chased after her with Megan on his heels.
"Not fair," Nathaniel screeched.
"Yeah, who said you could have help," Matt shouted. "That does it."
The rules were gone as everyone chose a side, and the chase was on. Kris became a target for helping Adam and the only thing he could do was pair up with his partner for safety.
"To your right," Adam yelled, as Matt tried to sneak up on Kris.
"Whatever," Kris said, running toward Adam. "You're not going to catch me alive."
"We'll see about that," Matt threatened.
Kris was hiding behind Adam. They danced as they tried to get away from their friends who were closing in on them.
"Give him up, Lambert," Megan joked.
"You can have him," Adam retorted. He swiveled so that he could push Kris in front of him. It was just a ploy, and it did its trick as everyone halted in their tracks to see what he was doing.
"Listen to me," Adam growled. Surprisingly they did. For a second anyway, because Matt was trying to get behind him. Adam got a laughing Kris in a relaxed choke hold. "You all need to back up or I'm going to snap his neck. Understand?"
Playing along, everyone took a step back.
"Now, Kris we're going to move slowly toward base. You make any funny moves and its over. Okay?"
"Oh please, let me go," Kris exclaimed with a dramatic sniffle. "Please don't hurt me." Kris played the damsel in distress role almost too well.
"Shut up," Adam warned in Kris's ear. "Or I’m taking out the kid next."
"Don't threaten the children," Alexis warned, putting an arm around Allison's shoulder.
"I don't know," Matt said to the others. "If Kris is gone, then its one less that we have to compete with tomorrow."
"You know, you're right," Anoop said.
"And there are more of us then there is of Adam," Megan added.
"Adam, I think you're doomed," Kris said. "Just give it up."
"Never," Adam said, releasing Kris and pushing him forward. He turned for base, but Kris rebounded and grabbed Adam's jacket. He had only a second before the others attacked. He looped his arm around Kris's middle, taking his roommate along with him. Except he forgot about Matt who leaped between Adam and the pillar. Unable to stop, he collided with Matt who teetered to get his balance. Adam tried to pull himself upright, but with Kris leaning against him, there was too much momentum for him to stop. The three of them went down in a heap.
Matt was beneath Adam who was squashed in the middle. Kris was sprawled out across the both of them. Laughing, he crawled off Adam who then rolled off Matt. Hot, exhausted, and knowing defeat, Adam lay on the sidewalk with his eyes closed. He couldn't believe he'd just had fun! Certainly none of his friends would believe that he'd just played Manhunt, did it sober and actually enjoyed it. He decided that it was the people around him. His mind stopped there, refusing to admit that one person in particular made it totally worthwhile.
Someone touched his face. Adam didn't need to open his eyes to know it was Kris. Gently, Kris ran a finger under one of Adam's eyes.
"You're liner is smudged," Kris said, turning his attention to Adam's other eye.
"Is it fixed?"
"Yeah," Kris said. "Perfect."
"Thanks," Adam opened his eyes to find a smiling Kris looking down at him. Despite everything, Adam was still picking up signals from Kris. Like the tenderness in those brown eyes staring into his. Desire flickered through his veins. All it needed was a touch to burst into an all-consuming flame. Never had he wanted anyone as much as did Kris. He told himself that he was just horny and that he just needed to fuck someone - and soon. If he did, it would make it easier to deal with the temptation of having Kris around. Kris looked away first, making him sigh in disappointment. At least he had the satisfaction of still being able to feel Kris's body heat.
Everyone was sitting on the sidewalk around them. Exhaustion was on all their faces. The game had burned off the nervousness that they'd hoped it would. It was almost time to call it a night.
"I hope none of us leave tomorrow," Allison said softly, breaking the silence.
"Me too," Nathaniel agreed.
"Yeah, I kind of like all you guys," Megan said, looping an arm around Allison's shoulders.
Everyone echoed in agreement. The night enveloped them, leaving them in their own private world where Idol was something to be dealt with tomorrow. For right now, they were content to be together. Adam shifted his arm so that it was next to Kris's leg. He was relieved when Kris didn't pull away.
It was a good night.
To be continued…
