Today was the last day of rehearsals for the second group trying to get it the Top 12. Adam was splayed out on one of the couches in the room where they came to hang out. They were rehearsing in performance order, and since he would be last, it had already been a long day as he'd waited for his turn.
At the moment, he didn't care. He was pretending to listen to music, but he was actually eavesdropping on Kris and Allison.
Across the room from where he was, Kris was coaching Allison on the guitar. It was Kris's suggestion because he wanted to help soothe Allison's nerves about the live performance tomorrow. However, Adam suspected it was to help Kris take his mind off the same thing. Whatever the reason was, Adam was touched by the gentleness which Kris handled the lesson. He never demanded anything from Allison, but took the time to make sure she understood what he was trying to show her. Every so often he would reach over to guide her fingers to the correct position for a chord, and then he played along with her until she was comfortable doing it on her own.
It was obvious, at least to Adam, that Kris would make a wonderful father. This thought should have discouraged him, because it was something else that divided them. If the universe had any justice then Kris would have a lot of children so they could be blessed by his generosity and loving spirit.
In the last couple of weeks, since the night of his random stranger fuck, Kris had become even more important to Adam. After that night, something shifted in their relationship. It was nothing that Adam could really pinpoint, but he could feel it in everything Kris did. Almost like he cared about Adam, but he just never took that step over the line to either say it or take the level of physical contact to beyond casual. Yet it gave Adam hope that one day it would cross that line. If it didn't, and his heart got broken, then at least he got to take this journey with Kris. It was funny how things worked out. That they'd both chosen this year to try out for American Idol. Sometimes he wondered how much the fates had been required to intervene to get an Arkansas boy to meet an LA party boy. And well, the rest of the story would be revealed in time.
Megan came into the room, followed by Danny, which broke his rambling thoughts. He wished they would go away. They brought an energy to the room that disrupted his sentimental musings and a sharp edged dose of reality to his heart. Whatever it was, they'd broke the moment, and it would never occur again. He gave one last wistful glance at Kris as he let time move on.
"Hey," Megan said, gesturing for Adam to move his feet so she can sit. "You ready for tomorrow?"
"Yeah," Adam said, sitting up. "How about you?"
"I'm trying to get there," Megan said.
"It's not that hard," Danny said, sitting down at one of the tables in the middle of the room. "Just go with the music, and let it lead you."
Adam had to suppress an eye roll, because it seemed that ever since making the Top 36, Danny seemed to be stuck on himself. But he also knew that Danny was just trying to help and fit in so he kept his eyes on Kris and his mouth shut. He was rewarded when Kris met his eyes and smiled, and he knew Kris felt the same way.
"I don't know," Megan said. "Watching Adam out there scares the crap out of me because he's so damn good."
"Whatever," Adam said. "You guys are all amazing. We'll all be fine."
"Yeah, until they start sending us home," Allison piped up. "A lot of us have already been cut, and there's a lot more to go."
"Yeah, but we're in Group Two," Kris said, beating the air around him. "And we're kick awesome."
"Group two rules," Allison cheered, raising a fist in the air.
The perkiness of his friends surprised Adam, and he slapped his hand over his face as he laughed. Yeah, life was pretty good right now, and he refused to think about any of them going home. Especially him or Kris. It would be like being ripped in half not to be able to see where their relationship would end. Like a song that never got beyond the chorus. Incomplete.
It seemed the disruption of the added company had spilled over to Kris and Allison because they were putting their guitars away.
"You sound really good, Allison," Danny said. "Are you going to play the guitar on the show?"
"Maybe," Allison said, with a smile. "If I get the nerve up."
"I think you should," Kris said, sitting on the arm of the couch next to Adam. "It will bring another dimension to your singing."
"I agree," Adam said, trying not to react to the tip of Kris's fingers resting on his back. "If I could play an instrument, I would."
"You don't need one," Kris said. "Your voice is its own instrument."
"Are you saying I have a big mouth?"
"Yeah," Kris grinned.
The teasing came easy to them, and that combined with Kris practically wrapped around him, Adam was melting. Maybe he should thank Danny and Megan for interrupting because this moment wasn't half-bad either. And decidedly much more real than the moment he'd been making in his head.
"Whatever," Adam managed to say. "You're just jealous because you have such a sweet voice."
"Stop already," Allison said, laughing. "You two are too much."
"Hey Adam," Maria, one of the stage techs, interrupted. "They need you on set."
"Just when it was getting fun," Adam said, balancing needlessly on Kris leg as he stood. He let his fingers slide along on Kris's inner thigh as he moved away, hoping that Kris felt the same electricity that he did. He couldn't help but smile because as he left the room, with just a little more saunter than usual, he could feel Kris's eyes following him.
~~~~~
Watching Adam perform was hot. It was the only word that Kris could think of to fit it. Literally hot, because Adam's gyrations were sending chills through Kris's body, and those chills were being chased by heat flashes. He crossed his hands in front of him hoping that the charges in his body wouldn't end in an erection.
He wondered if maybe he'd let his crush go too far, because they were becoming much more comfortable in physical demonstrations of affection. It seemed they couldn't pass each other without touching somehow. He told himself that he was just picking up on Adam's sexual persona and it had nothing to do with his own sexuality. It was hard to be around someone who oozed sex and not have it affect him somehow.
"Hey Kris," Allison said, slipping a hand around his arm.
"Yeah," Kris said, smoothing down his shirtfront as a cover for making sure that he wasn't going to show too much.
"You okay?" Allison looked at him with her head cocked as she studied him. "You look pale?"
"I’m fine," Kris said, knowing it was because all the blood had left his face to head to other regions. "What's up?" He looked over at her, and then grew concerned by the worried confusion on her face.
"You know those rumors that have been bouncing around? The ones about Adam?"
"Yeah, what about them?"
"Well, after you guys left," Allison said. "Danny was asking questions. You know, like if you two were dating, and if you were gay, too. It was weird, man, because he looked like it was more than just curiosity." She shrugged. "Not that he was being mean about it, but just…I don't know."
"Maybe being uncomfortable?" Kris asked. "He seems to be a little uptight about the whole gay issue, so I wouldn't worry about it."
"You don't care that he thinks you might be…you know with Adam?'
Kris laughed. "Not really. I’m not; we're not, so if Danny has problems with it then, oh well, that's his hang up not mine."
Allison seemed to relax. "Okay, if you don't care then I don't care." She smiled. "I should go study before the group rehearsal. See you later?"
"Yeah, you will," Kris answered, but he was distracted by Allison's news. He looked out at Adam who was finishing up his number. The guy was here to sing, not to field rumors about who he was, or to have labels placed on him. Some gossip around the set had gotten back to him, about not only Adam but also Nathaniel. Nothing mean, but speculation caused by not understanding or not wanting to understand their lifestyle. Of not wanting to see them as people first and gay second. Whatever it was, Kris wasn't going to let this go any further. Danny had asked him if he'd like to come to Bible study along with Michael. He had planned on refusing, but now he decided he was going to say yes.
~~~~
Kris's footsteps picked up, as he got closer to his hotel room. He was happy to be back at, what was temporarily his home. It had been a long day and he was looking forward to chilling with Adam. Over the last few weeks, they'd created a nighttime ritual that was comforting and reassuring, one like Kris had when he was a small boy with his parents, or the one he had with Katy. It made him feel safe and he would never admit it, but listening to Adam's voice, as he fell asleep was something that would forever be on his top ten list of favorite things.
His eyes closed for a second before he slipped the keycard into the slot. He pushed aside the world, its rules and the games you had to play to survive, so he wouldn't bring anything negative into this private world. A laugh escaped as he realized that he was picking up on Adam's vibes. Kris liked that Adam was always trying to find the good karma and chase away the bad.
"I'm home," Kris called, stepping into the room. "Did ya miss me?"
It was like home. Just as he suspected, a movie was playing and Adam was sitting up in his bed while a candle burned on the nightstand. The scent was something sensual. He thought Adam had said it was Sandalwood or something. Whatever it was, Kris liked it.
Adam grinned at him, and said. "No shit, and fuck no."
Sitting on the edge of his bed, he toed off his shoes and placed his Bible on the nightstand after he used it to push aside Adam's rings that littered the surface around the candle. He gestured toward the television with a tilt of his head.
"Whatcha watching?"
"Adventures of Priscilla," Adam said. "Did you learn anything at Bible study?"
Kris wasn't sure if Adam was serious or joking. His expression was serious, but there was that mischievous light in his eyes, so it was a toss up. He shook his head in slow motion as he tried to figure it out. Adam didn't say anything so he figured that he was serious. Or maybe he was just trying to convey that he was curious about why Kris suddenly took off with Danny and Michael for a Bible study, when it was never something he'd wanted to do before.
Adam had looked a little left out when Kris told him what his plans were, but he stuck to his decision not to tell Adam about Danny asking about their relationship. Hopefully, whatever made Danny ask in the first place had been put to rest tonight. Kris hadn't brought it up, but had made a point to talk about Katy, his work with his church and by telling them some of his adventures while away on missions. At the same time, Danny hadn't asked about Adam or said anything negative. He seemed as intent about sharing his faith as Kris was about his. Maybe they just needed to make an attempt at friendship, to concentrate on the alikeness between them, instead of the differences.
"Not that kind of study. We just talked about stuff, went over some scripture and prayed."
"Sounds interesting," Adam said. "But isn't it something that you do by yourself?" He waved a hand. "I know it’s the same thing as being in a club where you have the same interests. That much is obvious. But for you?"
"For me?" How could he explain it? There were a thousand pat answers that he could give by rote, but he didn't want to give those. This was Adam asking. Adam who thought God had forsaken him because of his sexuality. Adam who sometimes stared at his Bible with the look of a questioning child who was scared of the answers he might get. "Because He loves me," Kris said. "I feel Him with me all the time, but he promised that when two or more are gathered in his name that he'll be there, too." Maybe that wasn't the right way to explain because Adam seemed to be retreating. "Okay, you know when you're by yourself and you're jamming to the music, singing along and dancing, and it's good. You're having fun, right?"
"Yeah."
"What about when you're with some friends at a club doing the same thing? You can feel the energy feeding off each other, and it's even more fun, right?"
"Yeah, but I'm not exactly doing Godly things when I'm at a club," Adam snickered.
Kris sighed, and rubbed his forehead as he asked for guidance, but here in this room, with Adam, he felt distanced from God. Adam was an energy, a force, which like his music could block everything else out. The two went hand-in-hand because they both needed something from him that took away from the rest of his life. He needed to find the balance so he could keep everyone else happy, and be able to indulge his passions. The music was easier to deal with because everyone understood that, but Adam was different. He was getting in over his head by letting the crush run its course. The pull between them was getting stronger instead of weaker with time. How could he help Adam find God, if because of his feelings for Adam, he was keeping a part of himself from God?
"Hey, I'm sorry," Adam said. "I wasn't trying to mock your analogy. I get it, but, tell me, what it does for you?"
Relief washed over Kris, as if he'd been given a personal message from God telling him that he was worrying for nothing. He'd felt the first day that he'd met Adam that God had sent him to Kris. With Adam's question, it was as if God was reminding him of that. Adam was trying to understand Kris's feelings about God, not just Bible study or prayer in general. He was asking about Kris's personal relationship and that made it seem like Adam was trying to appreciate Kris a little more. There was a way for Kris to reconcile these two parts of his life. He just needed to find it.
"It makes me stronger," Kris answered from the heart. "The Bible helps me to learn more about Him and what he wants from us," he pointed to his head. "But sharing that word with others and praying keeps it in my heart. You can feel Him there; feel bathed in His love…it's amazing."
"Taken over by the Holy Spirit?"
"Something like that," Kris grinned. "It's a high like no other."
"That's cool," Adam said, nodding. "You really light up when you talk about him. Like somebody in love."
"It's kind of like that, but it’s the most powerful love that exists," Kris said.
"Aren't you going to tell me to try it sometime?"
Kris could feel the tension radiating from Adam, but he also felt a nudge inside to let it be. This time all he could be was an example, and let God do the leading. He felt he was doing a pretty good job of it so far.
"You know that I would love it if you did," Kris said, standing up. "But no, I'm not. That's something you'll have to decide for yourself." The conversation was over. Kris felt good about it and he felt more comfortable about his feelings for Adam. There was a purpose for everything. He pulled sleep clothes from the dresser and was about to head into the bathroom to change when he saw Adam eating something. "Hey, you've got ice cream?"
"Yeah, I do" Adam said, with a wicked grin dancing across his face as he pulled the pint tight against his chest "And it's mine."
"Oh man, share," Kris said, holding his hand out. "I'm starving."
"No," Adam rolled so that his back was to Kris. "You went out and left me here, so starve."
Kris laughed. After a long day of doing Idol, they would often raid the snack machine or order room service so they would have food while they watched a movie or talked. He probably should have called Adam to see if he wanted something before he came back or just brought something back for them.
"Man, I'm sorry."
"Not good enough. You didn't care that I was here by myself so fuck you," Adam said, laughing. "I'm not sharing."
"Please," Kris begged, reaching for the pint, but Adam held it away from him. He leaned over Adam, but Adam was rolling the other way, away from him again. "You're rotten."
"You're mean."
They were both laughing so hard the bed was shaking from it. Kris lunged to grab the ice cream without ever meaning to take it away from Adam. He was enjoying the playful reunion after a difficult day, and a heavy conversation. Adam rolled onto his stomach and held the ice cream out, leaving Kris only one choice. To crawl over Adam to get it, but realized that it was a mistake as his body screamed in pleasure at being on top of his roommate.
"Fine," Kris said, giving up. He was running again, but felt it was the safest choice as he rolled off Adam and the bed. He grabbed the clothes he dropped when the tussle started. "You eat all by yourself," but he couldn't resist poking Adam's hip with his finger. "Let it go to your hips, not mine."
Before Adam could reply or do anything other than sit up, Kris was in the bathroom. Adam's foulmouthed retort followed him though even if he couldn’t understand it. It took him only a couple of minutes to change and brush his teeth. When he came out, there was a pint of lemon sorbet with a spoon resting on top on his side of the nightstand. Adam hadn't forgotten him.
"Did you really think that I would forget you?"
"No, you wouldn't, and that's why you're my bestest friend." Kris plopped onto his bed even as he was stuffing his mouth with the tart dessert and then asked with a full mouth. "What's the movie about?"
"Drag queens touring Australia," Adam tossed the remote onto Kris's bed. "Change it if you want."
"It's cool," Kris said. "Who is Priscilla?"
"Priscilla is their bus."
"Oh, well I guess if you can name your car, why not name a bus?" He squinted at the television. "Especially if it's pink."
"Maybe if we make it to the end, we should get a pink tour bus," Adam said. "We'll name it something cooler though."
Kris finished another bite of his sorbet, and then put it down on the nightstand as he stretched out on his bed. "Like what?"
"I don't know," Adam said. "How about Eve? Then I can be inside her every night."
"You are bad," Kris said, throwing a pillow at Adam. "But that was good." He rolled over onto this side, alternating between looking at the television and at Adam. "Tell me about the club scene."
"You really want to hear about the debauchery that I get into?"
"Yeah," Kris said. His eyelids were growing heavy, but he tried to keep awake to listen to the rumble of Adam's voice as he talked about dressing up to go this club opening. The last thing he heard was Adam telling him was about a reporter interviewing him.
~~~~~
"And he's out…again," Adam said. He switched the television off. Kris was curled on his side with a hand tucked beneath his cheek looking as innocent as a child does. It was a good thing that Adam left out some of his tale, because he knew it would make Kris blush.
Adam grabbed the extra blanket thrown over a chair that they kept there for this. More nights than not, Kris fell asleep without getting under the covers, and Adam would throw a blanket over his friend. He turned the lights off, but stood for a moment watching Kris sleep. Times like this, he counted himself blessed for having someone like Kris around, and for getting a chance on Idol. It made him wonder why fate was being so kind to someone like him. Adam kissed the tips of his fingers and then pressed them to Kris's cheek. "Night baby," he whispered.
"Night Adam," Kris mumbled without ever waking up.
